Charleston County school board discusses overcrowding

The Charleston County school board met Monday night  and talked about overcrowding in Mt,. Pleasant schools.

Superintendent McGinley gave a status report on CCSD with graphics, specifically focusing on Early Childhood Education, Literacy Academies and enrollment numbers for a variety of student demographics. Dr. McGinley also reported that the District has officially signed a memorandum of understanding to increase Internet bandwidth in District 1.

The Board voted 5-3 to approve the Lowcountry Leadership Charter School request to lease the Schroder Middle School facility for up to 60 days beginning on the day the lease is signed.

The Board voted 6-1 to approve a recommendation to approve the Sales Tax Capital Programs 2011-12 Cash Flow Management.

The Board voted 6-1 to approve a recommendation to approve the allocation of savings from the 2005 Building Program. The savings will allow the District to expand both Laing Middle School and Jennie Moore Elementary School and each will now have a 1200 student capacity.

The Board voted 7-0 to approve a recommendation to approve the allocation of sales tax for completion of the Wando High School Center for Advanced Studies and a Memminger Elementary school project (onsite parking lot).

The Board voted 6-0 to approve the first reading of Policy IHBH – Charter Schools, which allows all new charter school applications to be first reviewed by the Education Committee.
