Deputies arrest detention officer for DUI

North Charleston, SC-: October 27, 2013: – Around 3 a.m. Sunday, a Charleston County Sheriff's deputy observed a vehicle traveling on I-26 Westbound failing to maintain a traffic lane.

Upon initiating a traffic stop the deputy approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver Anthony E. Middleton of Wye Lane Charleston.

While speaking with Middleton the deputy observed him to have and odor of consumed alcohol, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. The deputy requested Middleton exit the vehicle and then conducted field sobriety tests which Middleton failed.

Middleton was placed under arrest and charged with Driving Under the Influence and transported to the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center where a breathalyzer test was offered which Middleton refused. Middleton was booked on the DUI charge pending a bond hearing scheduled for 10 a.m.  

Middleton who is employed as a detention officer at the detention center was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation into the arrest.
