SC construction worker killed in Williamsburg crash

From our News Partners at WCBD-TV:

A construction zone flag operator was killed when the driver of a truck failed to stop at a construction zone on SC 41 in Williamsburg County on Monday afternoon, the SC Highway Patrol said.

The incident happened at 2:51 pm on SC 41 in a construction zone as traffic was stopped in a lane by the man who was working to regulate traffic in the area, troopers said.

A 2003 Toyota 4-Runner was already stopped at the beginning of the stopped lane when the driver of a 2004 pickup truck approached the SUV from behind while heading southbound on SC 41, the SC Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened on County Line Road near Big Dam Swamp Drive, officials said.

The pickup truck smashed into the back of the SUV and the pickup truck then veered off to the right, hitting the construction worker, SC troopers said.

The construction worker was taken to MUSC in Charleston, but later died, troopers said.

Williamsburg County Coroner Harrison McKnight identified the victim as Kenneth Long, Jr., 22, of Andrews.

The driver of the pickup truck was identified by troopers as Terry Edwards, age 53, of Georgetown, troopers said. Edwards suffered no injuries.

The driver of the SUV suffered injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Charges are pending in the case, according to authorities.
