CHARLESTON, SC - Winter Storm and Ice Storm Warnings are in place across all of the South Carolina Lowcountry ahead of a rare significant winter storm.
Cold air is filtering south through the Palmetto State Tuesday morning as a storm system forms off of the coast. As rain develops through the day, temperatures will continue to fall, and precipitation to transition to freezing rain and sleet by mid to late morning away from the coast. Precipitation will increase in coverage and intensity through the afternoon as the transition to freezing rain and sleet occurs all of the way to the coast. Later tonight as the atmosphere continues to cool, a transition to snow will occur.
At this time, damaging accumulations of ice are expected. Most areas will receive about a half inch of ice which can cause significant tree damage and extended power loss. Travel will become hazardous if not impossible due to ice on the roadways and the potential for falling trees and power lines.
In addition to the ice, around an inch or two of snow is expected near the Charleston metro with 2-4" possible near and west of I-95.
This is a potentially dangerous and life-threatening winter storm. Preparations should be rushed to completion within the warned area.
