A lot of new developments in the double murder of a mother and her daughter in the Sangaree area of Berkeley County. Earlier today the victim's identities are released--then Wednesday afternoon word of an arrest as well as results from the coroner.
How did the 8-year old Riley Burdock and her Mother 26-year old Ashley Kaney die? Investigators say Riley was strangled, asphyxiation by strangulation. Her death has been ruled a homicide her mother Ashley's cause of death has not yet been determined.
Also on Wednesday afternoon the Berkeley County Coroner's office called it outstanding police work and coordination by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.
Several agencies that included investigators from the U.S. Navy, SLED and the US Marshals Office made the arrest outside a 7-Eleven store in Virginia Beach Virginia.
The suspect is 23-year old Jacob Philip. The Arresting officer Clint Bagwell from the Virginia Beach PD talked to the media following the arrest.
"Is this going to be the right person? He looks like him he gave the name. Is this the right person? The second was getting him into custody without any further acts of violence."
News 2 has is told Philip a Petty Officer 3rd class in the U.S. Navy and is stationed here in Charleston at the Nuclear Power Training Facility. Investigators say after being taken into custody he confessed to the crimes. Officer Bagwell said the arrest went without incident.
"He just committed a double homicide I didn't think he would give up as easy as he did. He didn't put up a fight he didn't try to run he just gave himself up and that was it."
Investigators say the deaths came from an isolated domestic incident. The bodies were discovered Tuesday. Daughter, Riley hadn't been seen at Sangaree Intermediate School. After a person from the school visited the home she called deputies and the bodies were discovered inside the Kershaw road home.
Meantime the Berkeley County Coroner says the autopsy results on Ashley Kaney are pending due to toxicology and microscopic tests -- her exact cause of death may not be determined for a few more weeks.
